An Event for Young Adults

You are invited to join us on Saturday May 1^st 2010, at our national event, ‘Because we are young’, in London.

The event is especially for young adults (aged 16-30) and their friends.
It is also for Chaplains, adult companions, and all the supporters and friends of YCW.

Mass with Archbishop Vincent --- Rally with live music and RISE productions --- Party with music from Envy, Indecisive and Toby Rothwell

The Plan

- 2pm: Mass at Westminster Cathedral, London, with Archbishop Vincent NicholsWe will celebrate and give thanks for young adult’s contribution to society and the Church.

- Following Mass: Rally outside the CathedralWe will be standing up for the dignity of all young people.

- 6pm-late: Afterparty at St Joseph’s Hendon, NW4 4TY. (Everyone is welcome. Limited transport available to Hendon).

Finishing with an afterparty - food and music.

The Hampshire Fanning the Flame camp is held under canvas in the beautiful surroundings of The New Forest. It is suitable for young people aged 10 to 25 years with separate sessions for different age groups. There will be a chance to take part in activities such as horse riding, bible study, music, walks, meditative prayer, art, Mass, quizzes and adoration.

Lourdes Pilgrimage

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes
20th-27th August 2010

Lourdes is a very special place in the south of France that many people travel to each year to experience the closeness of God and to offer service to one another. The shrine is where Bernadette recieved her vision of Mary and where she found the spring of blessed water.

Lourdes is a place of healing and many sick and elderly people travel there to recieve comfort and God's blessing. People will bath in the water, light candles, pray and make very close friendship.

Many young adults make this pilgrimage to asisst with those who need a bit of extra help. Without the helpers the sick and elderly pilgrims would not be to atttend. The experince is very special and the sort of trip that once you make you will want to attend year after year. The opportunity to experience faith in an unique way and to develop very close friends make this pilgrimage a highlight of the year.

Age: 17+

Cost: £455 (Parishes will support with fundrasing)

Dates: Friday 20 to Friday 27 August 2010

The Pope is to visit Scotland and England 16 - 19 September.

Pope Benedict XVI will visit England and Scotland on a four-day state visit from 16-19 September 2010.
Scotland

Pope Benedict will be received at the Palace of Holyroodhouse by Her Majesty The Queen.
He will celebrate a public Mass in Glasgow.
His Holiness will also visit the West Midlands to beatify the nineteenth century theologian and educationalist Cardinal John Henry Newman at a public mass in Coventry.
His Holiness will give a major speech to British civil society at Westminster Hall.
He will be present at a prayer vigil.
There will be an event focusing on education.
Relations between the Christian Churches will be a theme of the visit as will the relations between the major faiths.
The Holy Father will visit the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace.
Pope Benedict will pray with other Church leaders at Westminster Abbey.

Youth Ministry in the Church

An afternoon for those interested in the future of young people in the Catholic Church. It is an opportunity to meet with youth leaders and to explore the future direction of youth ministry in our pastoral areas.

We have recently started an exciting joint venture developing youth ministry with the Pastoral Areas of; Southampton Central and West, Southampton East, 3 Rivers and Hampshire Downs.

This meeting will explain the vision behind the project, look at youth ministry in the diocese and at national level, and will enable us to look to the future in our own Pastoral Areas.

It will be a great opportunity to meet with those already involved in supporting young people and for those who might consider getting involved in the future. We would also like to invite parents and grandparents that are interested in knowing more about the project and contributing to the discussions on how we develop youth ministry.

My name is Peter and I am the Youth Development Leader for the Catholic Pastoral Areas of Southampton, 3 Rivers and Hampshire Downs. This Blog is intended to keep those involved in youth work up to date on current activities.

About me:

I don't normally write too much about myself on the Internet, preferring to remain enigmatic and mysterious, but in the spirit of openness I will reveal all. Perhaps not quite all, I need to save something for the memoirs.

I initially studied for a degree in Motorcycle Engineering but decided to do something faith related and it led me to Youth Work at a Catholic retreat centre. I have gone on to do various things over the years, mostly relating to working with young people and the church. My previous job was as a School Chaplain in a mixed comprehensive school in West Sussex.

My interests and likes:

Active sports - Currently looking for a football team, nothing too serious. I am a defender, getting a little slow but still pretty solid.
